Celadon Sake Bottle on Tatami in Kamakura Tearoom
by Cheryl Reyes
Glowing amber light from a hidden fire source washes over a slender ceramic sake bottle resting on woven rush mats. The celadon glaze shifts from pale aqua to soft green where the flames lick the curves, highlighting the smooth, unblemished surface. A wooden lattice screen frames the left side, creating a geometric opening that isolates the bottle against the dark, shadowed background of the tearoom. The dry season air leaves the fibers of the tatami mat crisp and pale yellow, against the deep shadows pooling in the corners. No dust settles on the clean surfaces, and the only movement is the subtle flicker of light dancing across the curved shoulder of the vessel. The bottle stands centered in the frame, casting a short, soft shadow that anchors it to the woven texture.
