Carrying Bread in Edinburgh

Mist rests on the cobbles of a narrow Edinburgh wynd, diffusing the pale gray light of dawn into a soft, uniform glow. A baker, face obscured by the brim of a flat cap and wrapped in a flour-dusted apron, carries a wooden tray of still-warm rolls toward a cast-iron door. The damp stone walls, scarred by centuries of salt and rain, reflect the faint orange spill from a nearby streetlamp. Beside the entrance, a battered folding ruler leans against a stack of crates, its yellow markings faded but distinct against the wet black slate.
