Carpenter Planing Wood in Asmara Morning Light in on a workshop shelf in Asmara

Carpenter Planing Wood in Asmara Morning Light

by Wade Gilmore

Soft gray morning light falls through sheer curtains, cutting distinct shafts across a wooden workbench in an Asmara workshop. A heavy iron hand plane rests on a thick plank of timber, its blade buried slightly into the grain. Thin, continuous ribbons of pale wood curl away from the metal, spiraling onto the surface. Fine dust particles hang suspended in the beams of light, swirling gently near the planed edge. The wood shows deep scratches and a weathered patina, evidence of years of use. A few scattered shavings lie near the edge of the shelf, against the smooth, planed section. The iron plane gleams faintly where the light strikes its curved body, highlighting the texture of the sawdust clinging to its base.
