Dust in Morning Light School Kuala Lumpur
by June English
Cool gray morning light streams through high windows into a quiet woodshop classroom in Kuala Lumpur, illuminating floating particles of dust. Rows of wooden workbenches and student desks stand empty, arranged in neat lines that stretch toward the back wall. Sawdust coats the surfaces of the workbenches, mingling with fine layers of gray dust that settle on the edges of tools and the tops of chairs. The cool season air is still, allowing the dust motes to hang suspended in the bright shafts of light. Wooden shavings lie scattered on the floorboards near the base of a large workbench, while a metal clamp rests untouched on the edge of the nearest table. The focus shifts from the sharp grain of the wood in the foreground to the soft, blurred outlines of desks further back, leaving at the edge in the way the light catches the edge of a chisel handle.
