Candlelit Buddhist Cave Temple with Seated Figures
by Jason Dixon
Dim natural light falls through high windows into a vast nave carved from stone, illuminating hundreds of seated figures arranged in tight rows. The figures, hewn directly from the cave walls, display weathered textures and muted earth tones ranging from ochre to slate gray. Warm interior lamps cast soft pools of amber light that reveal dust motes drifting in the air where beams penetrate the gloom. Outside the high openings, the faint glow of city lights begins to emerge against the early autumn sky, creating a subtle contrast with the deep shadows inside. The stone surfaces show rough chisel marks and smooth, polished edges where hands have rested for generations. One shaft of light falls across the face of a central figure, highlighting the curve of a shoulder and the deep crevices of the carving.
