Brass Censer Beside Painted Columns in Victoria Chapel

by Isabelle McKee

Muted copper light washes over a polished brass censer resting on a stone ledge beside tall, painted columns. The metal surface displays a mottled patina of green and dark brown, against the smooth, pale cream paint of the architectural details. Soft shadows stretch across the floor, where faint reflections of the censer and columns ripple in the ambient glow. Late spring air does not move the scene, but the stillness is visible in the unbroken lines of the columns and the steady light filtering through unseen stained glass. The brass curves catch the warm candlelight, creating small, bright highlights that emphasize the texture of the aged metal. A thin shadow falls across the base of the nearest column, at the base of the object in the quiet space.
