Bluebell Carpet Under Oak Canopy Dawn in in Turkey

Bluebell Carpet Under Oak Canopy Dawn

by Edith Townsend

Soft, gray morning light falls through the dense canopy of an ancient oak tree, illuminating a thick carpet of bluebells in early winter. The flowers, ranging from pale violet to deep indigo, cluster tightly around the rough, dark bark of the tree trunk. Dry oak leaves skitter across the forest floor, caught in a sudden gust that lifts them briefly before they settle back onto the wet earth. The ground appears damp, reflecting the diffused sky through the gaps in the branches. Each bell-shaped bloom hangs downward, their stems bent slightly under the weight of the cool air. The texture of the moss between the flowers is velvety and dark, against the smooth, waxy petals of the bluebells. One leaf rests against the base of a flower stem, its edge turning brown from the season.
