Bakery Worker in Athens
by Earl Farmer
Flat noon light bleaches the facade of a neoclassical apartment block in central Athens, casting hard, short shadows beneath the iron balconies. On the ground level, a small family-owned bakery displays a weathered wooden counter where a woman in a white apron sorts fresh bread into a wire basket. Beside the bread, a chipped blue enamel basin sits on a crate, holding a few wet flour-dusted hands and a pair of heavy tailor shears resting on a cloth. The rough texture of the stucco wall contrasts with the smooth, glazed tiles of the shopfront. A scarf hangs loosely from a hook near the entrance, fluttering slightly in the stagnant air.
