Bakery Steps in Merida

Mist rests on the colonial facade of a Merida bakery as a vendor sweeps the stone steps with a traditional palm broom, the bristles blurring in motion against the damp pavement. Steam rises from a small window where a chipped blue enamel cup sits on a wooden sill, condensation beading on its rim. Inside, the warm glow of a gas stove illuminates a baking sheet and a metal whisk resting near a stack of patchwork pillows used to cushion a heavy oven door.
