Cool early morning light cuts through the open doorway of a colonial-era bakery in Merida, casting a sharp, bright stripe across the worn terrazzo floor. A baker in a flour-dusted apron bends over a low wooden counter, his hands moving with practiced speed as he arranges rows of steaming pan dulce. Beside him, a pile of ripe yellow bananas rests on a metal tray, their curves against the rigid geometry of the tiled wall. The air is still, save for the subtle rise of steam from the cooling racks. Sunlight spills onto the entrance, highlighting the texture of the rough stucco and the smooth glaze of a porcelain jar sitting near the register.
