Arranging Basil in Rome

by Whitney Boyd

The narrow passageway of a historic Roman trattaria glows under the amber spill of a sodium streetlamp, illuminating a cluttered service counter where daily life pauses. A server’s hands, dusted with fine white flour, carefully arrange fresh basil leaves onto a wooden tray, the motion frozen in the low light. Behind them, a glass pitcher and a sugar jar sit on a dark stone slab, their surfaces catching the neon reflection from a nearby pharmacy sign. A peg rail hangs loosely on the wall, holding a single hook that sways slightly from the draft of the open door.
