Antique Sextant on Dusty Library Chart
by Mia Rice
North-window sidelight spills across a weathered wooden table, illuminating the brass curves of an antique sextant resting atop an open navigation chart. Dust motes hang suspended in the angled beams, settling on the faded ink lines and the metallic sheen of the instrument's arc. The late-afternoon sun casts long, soft shadows that stretch toward the room's edge, highlighting the texture of the paper and the tarnished patina of the brass fittings. A faint salt-air freshness seems to linger in the stillness, suggested by the cool tone of the light and the open feel of the space. The instrument's mirror reflects the bright window frame, while the chart's grid lines create a geometric contrast against the organic grain of the wood. A small brass knob catches the light, glowing like a tiny sun against the darker shadows of the table's surface.
