Linen Sextant on Oak Desk in Montero Light
by Terry Cook
Pale morning light floods the room, bouncing off smooth, off-white walls to illuminate a brass sextant resting on a weathered oak surface. The instrument features a linen-wrapped handle, its fabric fibers catching the soft glow. Hairline scratches mark the metal arc, revealing years of use against the polished wood grain. The desk sits adjacent to a velvet chair draped in deep crimson fabric, its texture soft and dense. Shadows fall gently across the tabletop, defining the object's curves without harsh edges. Dust motes are absent from the air, leaving the surfaces starkly clean. The brass fittings reflect the bright, diffuse light, creating small, sharp highlights along the curved frame. One scratch near the index mirror catches the sun, standing out against the duller surrounding metal.
