After Rain in Amman

First light after rain washes the limestone facade of a Jabal Al-Weibdeh café in pale, diffused blue. The wet pavement reflects the warm orange glow of a hanging filament bulb, creating a stark contrast with the cool morning air. Inside the open storefront, a baker’s work surface is cluttered with lived-in details: a stack of speckled stoneware glaze plates sits near a brass ladle resting on a towel, while a single sun hat hangs from a hook, its brim catching the damp air. Through the glass, the street is empty except for a distant figure in a yellow raincoat, blurred by the mist.
