Vendor Cart in Amman
by Karina Kidd
The blue hour settles over a narrow Amman street, casting a deep indigo hue over the warm limestone facades of traditional multi-story buildings. In the foreground, a street vendor’s cart glows with the amber light of a single hanging bulb, illuminating a stack of woven baskets used for carrying fresh za'atar and flatbreads. Beside the baskets, a ceramic serving platter holds remnants of yesterday’s meal, its glaze reflecting the street’s ambient glow. A customer in a long coat pauses, handing a coin to the vendor, whose hands move with practiced efficiency. The vertical lines of the building’s balconies, where laundry hangs limp in the still air, creating a layered composition of daily life against the cooling evening sky.
