Bakery Counter in Amman
by Renata Weeks
Dusk settles over a narrow Amman alleyway where rain slicks the limestone steps, reflecting the warm amber glow from a nearby bakery’s open doorway. In the foreground, a weathered wooden counter holds a cluster of daily essentials: a brass tea kettle steaming faintly, a glass jar filled with dried mint, and a small ashtray catching the first drops of rain. The background reveals the textured stone facade of a traditional house, its windows framed by wrought iron bars that contrast with the soft, diffused light of the wet evening. One drop of water slides down the porcelain rim of a cup, distorting the reflection of the streetlamp above.
