After Hours in Hong Kong

by Ricky Beard

Rain-slicked pavement in Mong Kok reflects the neon glare of a late-night dim sum stall, where a vendor in a translucent plastic apron wipes down a stainless steel counter after clearing the last orders. A chipped white plate sits abandoned near the edge, holding a single, curled orange peel that catches the pinkish hue of a nearby sign. Beside it, a pair of chipped ceramic tea mugs rest upside down on a drying rack, steam still faintly rising from the warmth of the ceramic against the chill of the damp night air.
