Aerial View of Monastery Vineyard Rows Near Haifa

by Cathy Willis

Freshly irrigated soil lines stretch in parallel rows beneath a clear late-afternoon sky, their dark earth against the dry, pale dust drifting through the air. Green vines rest on the ground in orderly clusters, their leaves catching the sharp mountain light that defines the dry season. At the far end of the vineyard, a weathered stone cross stands as a solitary marker against the horizon. Chaff floats lazily above the furrows, catching the sun's low angle. The rows create a rhythmic pattern of green and brown earth, leading toward the cross. Fine particles of dust settle on the leaves, showing the arid conditions of the landscape. The stone surface of the cross shows rough texture where sunlight hits directly.
