Red Desert Songline Ceremony Sydney Hall in in a ceremonial hall in Sydney

Red Desert Songline Ceremony Sydney Hall

by Matias Ayala

Cool blue twilight floods a wide ceremonial hall in Sydney, where midsummer air meets the red earth of an Aboriginal songline ceremony. Figures in traditional ochre-dyed garments stand in a loose circle on a floor patterned with red ochre dust, their forms sharp against the deepening sky. A perfectly clear night hangs above the open roof, revealing no clouds. The impossible element anchors the center: a teacup scaled to the size of a swimming pool rests on the sand, its porcelain rim catching the last light. The cup's glaze reflects the blue hour, while the surrounding sand grains remain distinct and rough. Shadows stretch long across the red ground, ending at the rim of the giant cup where one drop of water pools.
