Aboriginal Dance Under Circus Tent Sydney

Stark fluorescent tubes strip the color from the canvas walls of a large circus tent in Surry Hills. Three dancers stand on a dusty floor, their bodies painted in white ochre and black charcoal, arms raised in a corroboree formation. Behind them, thick stage haze rests on the air, softening the view of heavy black curtains and coiled electrical cables snaking across the ground. The early summer heat hangs heavy, visible in the sheen of sweat on their skin and the slight lift of the fabric overhead. Shadows stretch long and sharp against the tent poles, while the raw texture of the painted canvas contrasts with the smooth, artificial glow of the overhead lights. One coiled cable rests on the dirt near a dancer's bare foot.
