Workshop Corner in Brussels
by Randall Head
Warm late afternoon light spills across the cobblestones of a Brussels side street, illuminating a corner workshop where a cobbler leans over a heavy wooden bench. The cluttered work surface reveals a leather tool apron draped over a stool, its pockets stuffed with awls and waxed thread, while a steel rasp and a worn trowel lie discarded near a half-finished boot. A small brass thermometer hangs on the peeling lime-washed wall, its mercury marking the heat. Through the open doorway, a tabby cat sleeps on a stack of rubber soles, ignoring the activity inside. The rough texture of aged brick and the bright, dusty air that hangs in the stagnant heat of the Belgian summer.
