The heavy twilight in Brussels presses against the wet pavement, reflecting the amber glow of a nearby tram line onto the slick cobblestones. Under the corrugated metal awning of a narrow bistro, a street vendor wipes down a stainless steel workbench, his movements efficient and practiced. Steam rises from a stack of folding tables, condensing into droplets that slide over the cracked painted stucco of the adjacent wall, revealing layers of old grey and blue paint beneath. One whisk rests in a basin of soapy water, catching the faint light, while finger smudges on a nearby clear glass pane blur the view of the rainy street outside.
