Working Clay in Oaxaca

by Frederick Jacobson

Mist rests on the cobblestone slope of Calle de los Sapos as the first gray light reveals a ceramic workshop in full motion. Inside the open doorway, a potter’s hands work wet clay on a spinning wheel, while shelves behind him hold rows of colorful glazed vessels and hanging tool hooks holding wooden paddles. A teapot sits on a nearby stove, steam blending with the dawn fog that drifts in from the street. Outside, a neighbor sweeps the wet stones, their broom bristles splayed against the damp surface, while a rake leans against a wall of bright blue stucco.
