Woodcarving Gouges in Leather Roll
Dust motes hang in the thick, dry air of a late afternoon room near Siguiri. A leather roll, worn soft and tan, rests on a dark wooden writing desk. Inside, three steel gouges gleam with a cool, pale reflection from the north window. The light cuts a sharp diagonal across the desk, illuminating the grain of the wood and the smooth curves of the metal tools. The leather casing shows fine scratches and creases, evidence of frequent use. Shadows stretch long and soft toward the corner of the room, while the bright window frame defines the edge of the space. The steel tips catch the sun, creating tiny, bright sparks against the matte brown leather. A small, circular scratch marks the desk surface near the roll's edge.
