Woman in White Sari Pouring Water at Delhi Ghat
by Beth McKee
Heavy gray clouds press low over the stone steps of a Delhi ghat near Paharganj, diffusing the late afternoon light into a soft, even glow. A woman stands on the weathered granite, her white sari draped with sharp creases against the muted tones of the riverbank. She holds a rounded copper pot, its surface tarnished to a deep, reddish-brown, tilting it to release a clear stream of water that arcs toward the dark, still river below. The stone steps show years of wear, their edges smoothed and stained by constant use. Behind her, the river reflects the overcast sky, while the rough texture of her clothing and the metallic sheen of the pot catch the ambient light. A droplet hangs momentarily from the pot's rim before falling into the water.
