Wiping Table in Vienna
by Kiara Cortez
Rain-slicked cobblestones reflect the flat gray sky outside a traditional Viennese coffee house, where a waiter in a crisp white shirt and black vest pauses to wipe a heavy mahogany table with a damp cloth. Thin scratches on the tabletop surface catch the diffused light, revealing decades of use beneath the polish. A blue and white porcelain bowl sits near the edge, holding a small pile of mint leaves and discarded sugar packets, evidence of a recent customer's departure. The wet street outside blurs into streaks of color from passing trams, while the interior remains a quiet pocket of ordered stillness, framed by the dark wood of the menu board and the condensation on the windowpane.
