Winter Dawn Volleyball Net Shadows
by Kristin Ali
Cold moonlight spills over a village lane near Sidi Bel Abbès, illuminating a volleyball net that stands rigid yet seems to tremble in the stillness. The sand beneath is hot to the touch, against the biting winter air that hangs heavy in the pre-dawn silence. Long, sharp shadows stretch across the ground, cast by the net's mesh and the surrounding adobe walls that line the narrow path. The sky above is a deep, clear indigo, devoid of clouds, while the moonlight creates a stark, silver sheen on the net's white tape. Dust motes are absent, replaced by the crisp clarity of the winter morning. The net's fabric ripples slightly, suggesting an invisible force or the anticipation of movement. At the base, the sand shifts under the weight of the net's posts, creating a textured boundary between the built environment and the open court.
