Wet Glass in Kyoto

by Marlene Hahn

The deep indigo of Kyoto’s blue hour settles over a narrow alley in Pontocho, where the damp stone pavement reflects the warm, saturated glow of paper lanterns hanging low above. A small, crowded izakaya spills its presence onto the street, with condensation-slicked glass windows revealing a busy interior lit by amber light. Through the pane, a server in a crisp white apron navigates past wooden bar stools, balancing a tray of ceramic sake cups. Outside, a wet water mark stains the dark plaster of the adjacent building, against the sleek, modern signage of a nearby shop.
