Welding Sparks in Predawn Turbine Hall

by Malik Barajas

Low tungsten light from a high window cuts through the predawn darkness of a turbine hall near Bareilly, illuminating a worker in protective gear. Bright orange sparks erupt from a welding torch, scattering in sharp arcs against the gloom. The air is filled with floating dust motes catching the faint glow. Massive steel turbine components loom in the shadows, their surfaces rough and oily. Leading lines formed by heavy pipes and structural beams guide toward the bright point of welding. Early spring is hinted at by the cool, clear light filtering through the grimy glass. at the edge is a cluster of molten droplets freezing mid-air on the dark metal floor.
