Weightlifter Chalks Hands in Toronto Library Dawn
by Nia Hicks
Pale dawn light slips across the polished oak floor of a Toronto reading room, illuminating dust motes suspended in the humid air of monsoon season. A weightlifter stands in the center of the high-ceilinged space, knees bent, arms raised as white chalk dust puffs into the soft, gray morning glow. Rows of dark leather-bound books line the walls behind him, their spines catching the faint light. The floor reflects his silhouette and the swirling chalk in muted, elongated streaks. His muscles tense with visible effort, the chalk coating his palms and fingers in thick, white layers. A diagonal line of shadow stretches from the window, cutting across the room and anchoring his stance against the quiet grandeur of the architecture. at the edge is a single, sharp cloud of chalk dust hanging motionless in the beam of light.
