A weathered wooden stool sits on the concrete landing of a Beijing hutong alleyway, lit by the sharp, bright light of late morning. The rough grain of the aged timber is highlighted by the sun, against the peeling white paint on the adjacent brick wall. One red envelope rests casually on the seat, its vibrant color standing out against the muted tones of the historic neighborhood. Dust motes dance in the shaft of light that falls across the textured surface of the floor.
