Lantern at First Light in in Beijing, China

Lantern at First Light

by Ronnie Salas

A damp alleyway in the Hutong district reflects the pale, diffused light of early morning after a rain shower. The narrow passage is flanked by traditional grey brick walls, their surfaces slick with moisture and streaked with years of urban grime. A solitary red paper lantern hangs slightly askew from a rusted iron bracket, its paper surface softening the grey light without glowing. In the foreground, a worn rattan stool sits overturned near a drainage grate, its woven texture rough against the smooth, wet concrete. A discarded rake head leans against a wooden doorframe, its tines caked with dried mud.
