Water Line Flush Key Dry Feedlot Lane

by Alexander Ray

Damp concrete stretches along a New Mexico feedlot lane, its surface marked by distinct wash patterns where water has recently flowed. A heavy industrial flush key rests near the edge, surrounded by scattered straw drifts that catch the fading blue evening light. Ground fog pools in the low depressions of the concrete, softening the harsh lines of the dry season. Reflected light shimmers across the wet patches, creating cool gray highlights against the warm, dusty tones of the surrounding earth. The leading lines of the lane draw toward the vanishing point, where the fog thickens. One dark shadow falls across the wet concrete near the key, showing the texture of the damp surface.
