Water Carrier with Brass Vessels on Mombasa Path
by Cory Guzman
Brass vessels gleam under the flat, unyielding glare of noon light, their surfaces reflecting the harsh sky above. A water carrier walks along a rugged mountain path near Mombasa, the wet season turning the earth into a patchwork of mud and resilient green vegetation. Fine sea spray hangs in the air, catching the sunlight and creating a shimmering haze around the figure. The carrier wears simple, practical clothing suited for the journey, while the heavy brass pots balance securely on their head. Negative space surrounds the subject, showing the isolation of the path against the vast, open sky. The texture of the worn path contrasts with the smooth, polished metal of the vessels, highlighting the daily labor involved in transporting water through this coastal landscape. One droplet of water rests on the rim of the lower brass pot, catching the light before falling.
