The flat noon light bleaches the color from the corrugated zinc roof of a roadside chop bar in Accra, casting sharp, geometric shadows across the concrete floor. A woman in a bright yellow wrapper stands at a chipped enamel wash basin, her hands submerged in soapy water, scrubbing a stack of aluminum plates with a stiff dish brush. Beside her, a scuffed wooden table holds a rusted adjustable spanner and a faded stovetop kettle, tools of a trade that blends cooking with maintenance. Woven cane mats line the walls, filtering the harsh light into dappled patterns on the damp concrete.
