Washing Dishes in Hanoi
by Kirk Estrada
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast Hanoi midday, a narrow alleyway reveals a lived-in domestic moment where daily chores intersect with street life. A woman in a faded yellow ao dai stands beside a weathered concrete sink, her hands submerged in soapy water, scrubbing a stack of white ceramic bowls that show faint hairline crazing from years of use. Beside her, a rusted metal dish rack holds dripping plates, while a pair of green garden shears rests precariously on the wet ledge, their handles stained with soil. A blue towel edge drapes over a nearby bamboo rail, catching the gray ambient light, against the vibrant red plastic stools stacked nearby.
