Viaduct Shadow Over Rain-Wet Nigerian Allotments in along a bridge maintenance walkway in Nigeria

Viaduct Shadow Over Rain-Wet Nigerian Allotments

by Marilyn Kennedy

Thick mist hangs low over rows of small garden plots, softening the edges of green vegetable leaves and muddy soil. A massive concrete viaduct looms overhead, its underside casting a sharp, dark geometric shadow that slices diagonally across the cultivated earth. The ground glistens with recent rain, reflecting the pale afternoon sky through the fog. Bright daylight pierces the mist in scattered beams, illuminating dust particles and the wet texture of the soil. Wooden stakes and simple trellises stand in orderly lines within the shadowed zone, against the sunlit patches beyond. The heavy concrete structure dominates the upper frame, its rough surface marked by weathering and moss, while the shadow creates a stark division between the cool, damp earth and the bright, hazy air above.
