Early Morning Rain Shadows on Vancouver Allotment Gardens Under SkyTrain Viaduct

by Heidi Bradshaw

Damp soil and green leafy rows fill the foreground of a community garden plot nestled beneath the massive concrete pillars of the Vancouver SkyTrain viaduct. The early morning light is diffuse and gray, casting long, sharp geometric shadows from the overhead railway structure across the vegetable beds. Rain has recently passed, leaving puddles that reflect the steel girders above. A few gardeners in waterproof jackets tend to their plots, moving slowly between the rows of spinach and chard. The intersection of urban infrastructure and local agriculture, with the heavy industrial lines of the transit system contrasting against the organic shapes of the plants and the wet earth.
