Vendor Cart in Guadalajara

by Desiree Roth

Rain-slicked cobblestones of the historic center reflect the pale, diffused morning light, creating a mirror-like surface that doubles the colors of nearby colonial facades. A street vendor’s cart, constructed from repurposed metal and wood, sits parked near a corner church, its awning still damp from the night’s downpour. Inside the cart’s open shelf, a cluster of bright red tomatoes rests in a woven basket, their glossy skins catching the soft, wet light, against the dull gray of the wet pavement. A black cat, sleek and alert, leaps from the cart’s edge onto a nearby low wall, its movement frozen in the quiet morning stillness.
