Pedestrian in Merida at First Light

by Linda Bridges

Wet cobblestones in Merida’s historic center reflect the pale, diffused light of early morning after a tropical downpour. A street vendor’s cart, slick with rain, displays a row of bright ceramic jars and a simple wooden boot scraper resting against the wheel well. Palm fronds overhead cast sharp, dark shadows across the glistening pavement, their shapes distorted in the shallow puddles near the curb. A lone pedestrian in a raincoat steps carefully over a grate, their boots leaving temporary impressions in the dust.
