Twilight Light Refracted Through Glass Sphere

by Lucy Blevins

Dim twilight falls through the glass roof of a Fukuoka arcade, casting soft geometric patterns across the floor. A clear glass sphere rests on a bed of fine, pale sand, acting as a prism for the mixed interior lamps and fading natural light. Sharp bands of orange and blue refract outward, creating rhythmic lines that contrast with the deep shadows clinging to the arcade walls. The sand grains catch the fractured light, sparkling faintly where the beams touch. Smooth curves of the sphere bend the ambient glow into distinct, overlapping shapes that align with the building's structural grid. at the edge is a thin, bright line of light tracing the sphere's base against the textured grains.
