Turmeric Pyramids and Train Car in Torreón
by Bette Nieves
Low tungsten light from a high window washes the stall in warm, amber tones before dawn. Three distinct pyramids of bright yellow turmeric and deep red paprika rise from a wooden counter, their powdery textures catching the dim glow. Behind the spices, the rusted, corrugated metal side of a passenger train car is embedded directly into the brick wall of the market stall, its wheels resting on the dusty ground. Low-hanging clouds obscure the sky outside, casting a gray pallor that contrasts with the vivid colors of the spices. The dry season air hangs heavy, settling on the rough wood and the smooth metal of the train. A shadow from the train car falls across the base of the spice mounds, creating a sharp geometric line against the organic piles. The metal surface of the train reflects the faint window light, highlighting rivets and peeling paint.
