Trimming Rattan in Yogyakarta

by Oscar Murillo

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday in Yogyakarta, a narrow alleyway behind a row of traditional joglo-style workshops reveals a moment of quiet industry. A young apprentice in a faded blue shirt stands before a heavy, weathered wooden cabinet, his hands busy with a pair of pruning shears used for trimming rattan. The rust on a cabinet latch catches the dull ambient light, against the smooth, green blades of the shears resting on a workbench cluttered with dried palm fronds. Nearby, a simple metal latch hangs open on a bamboo door, while the shadow of a peg rail stretches across the rough plaster wall, marking the passage of time in this lived-in, tactile space.
