Transparent Kites at Noon Market
by Ivy O'Brien
Soft rain-washed light falls across a crowded outdoor market in Ciudad del Este, where colorful Pakistani Basant kites float just above the stalls. The sky remains a clear late spring blue despite the wet ground. Most objects retain their normal textures, but one large diamond-shaped kite stands out as entirely transparent like glass while holding its original vibrant orange and green tint. This impossible object lets the market activity behind it remain fully visible through its surface. Vendors arrange fruits in woven baskets beside the floating kite. The wet pavement reflects the bright noon glare and the sharp edges of the transparent shape. A child reaches toward the glass-like object, their hand passing through the empty space where the kite's body should block the view. The reflection of a nearby shop sign appears distorted on the curved surface of the clear kite.
