Torii Gate Half-Submerged in Tokyo Atrium Water

by Cathy Finch

Late morning light falls through low-hanging clouds, casting a muted glow across a massive vaulted atrium in Tokyo. A traditional red-orange torii gate stands partially submerged in still water that fills the floor. The water's surface reflects the gate's vermilion pillars and the gray sky above, creating a layered visual depth. Wet autumn leaves in shades of brown and gold rest on the water's edge and float near the base of the gate. The stone foundation beneath the water is visible through the clear liquid, against the smooth, dark wood of the structure. Shadows from the high vaulted ceiling stretch across the wet floor, showing the scale of the space.
