Thai Piphat Musicians Under Fluorescent Tent Light
by April Stein
Vivid white fluorescent tubes cast a harsh, clinical glow over a group of Thai piphat musicians performing inside a temporary pavilion. The circular frame of the circus tent looms above, its fabric stretched taut against low-hanging grey clouds visible through the open sides. Musicians in traditional silk costumes sit on the floor, their fingers moving rapidly across the xylophone-like ranat ek and the gong circles of the khong wong yai. The light reflects sharply off the polished brass surfaces of the instruments, creating bright, scattered highlights against the deep shadows of the predawn darkness. Red and gold patterns on the performers' sashes stand out vividly against the muted tones of the tent interior. A musician's head tilts forward, focusing intently on the rhythmic strikes of a mallet resting on the wooden frame.
