Terracotta Bowls in Quito

by Glen Melendez

A cluster of unglazed terracotta bowls rests on a narrow balcony ledge overlooking the dense, green canopy of Quito's historic district. The noon sun casts sharp, high-contrast shadows across the rough, earthy surfaces of the stacked pottery, highlighting their irregular rims. Behind the bowls, a section of cracked painted stucco wall shows layers of faded ochre and white paint peeling away to reveal the plaster beneath. Small droplets of water rest on the darkened tile grout in the corner, evidence of recent cleaning or morning dew evaporation in the cool mountain air.
