The early evening sun casts a sharp, bright stripe across the terracotta floor tiles of a narrow alleyway in Quito, Ecuador. The light catches the texture of a nearby wall where white painted stucco is cracked and peeling, revealing the earth beneath. A wooden gate handle, worn smooth by use, gleams faintly in the dimming light. On a low concrete ledge, a cluster of potted herbs sits in simple clay pots, their green leaves against the warm tones of the surroundings. An eggplant rests casually among the greenery, its deep purple skin absorbing the fading light.
