Tempera Handprints on Preschool Easel in Dhaka Classroom

Thick layers of bright red, yellow, and blue tempera paint coat the vertical surface of a wooden preschool easel. Dozens of small, overlapping handprints press into the wet pigment, their edges soft and irregular. The room is dim except for the harsh, buzzing glow of a single fluorescent tube overhead, casting stark shadows across the paint. Outside the window, rain streaks the glass, blurring the dark silhouette of an Old Dhaka street. Dust motes float in the light beam, settling on the unpainted wood of the easel's lower shelf. A stack of white paper rests on the bottom ledge, waiting for the next burst of color. The wet paint reflects the cold overhead light in small, glossy patches.
