Sunlight slants through the open doorway of a busy Durban takeaway, catching the steam rising from a stack of white polystyrene containers on the counter. A woman in a bright yellow headscarf presses a paper bag into the hands of a waiting customer, her fingers brushing against a crumpled receipt. Behind them, a stainless steel skillet sits cooling on a rack, its surface dull under the fading light. On the windowsill, a plastic cup holds a few wooden toothpicks, next to a half-peeled lemon resting on a napkin. The street outside is blurred by the heat haze, but the interior is sharp, focused on the transaction and the clutter of everyday service.
